Oil painting Spirit of the Forest – Magdalena Dziejma
The oil painting “Spirit of the Forest” is a tribute to nature – to its strength, its silence and its spiritual depth. It was created especially for the exhibition “The Podlasie Dimension of Art” in Białystok, where it was meant to tell the story of the bond between people and the natural world. After all, Podlasie is the green lung of Poland – a place where the forest breathes and you can hear your own thoughts. In this way, the painting became a story of harmony between a woman and the world of nature, of coexistence and mutual respect.
At the centre of the composition is a woman with her eyes closed – calm, serene, almost grown together with the animals around her. She is accompanied by a European bison, a hare and a squirrel – symbols of wildness, alertness and the lightness of life. Their presence is no accident. Because each of these creatures carries a different aspect of nature, together they form a whole – the spiritual unity of the forest. The woman does not dominate the animals; instead, she becomes part of them, as if her energy were intertwining with theirs.
The colour palette is built on deep greens, browns and blues. As a result, the composition radiates calm and, at the same time, mystery. Although the whole is kept in dark tones, it still carries warmth and life. The woman, the animals and the forest create a shared energy – a calm you can feel simply by looking at the canvas. Even though each element is painted individually, together they create a harmony that works like the breath of nature.
It is a painting about gratitude to nature – to Podlasie, which still rustles, breathes and guards its secrets.
The painting brings calm and reflection into an interior, while drawing the eye with the depth of its colour and meaning. It pairs beautifully with natural spaces – wood, greenery and linen fabrics – filling the room with harmony and the breath of nature.
